My career story

My career story isn’t a typical one. I don’t have a communications degree. I don’t write short stories. Despite that, I’ve been lucky enough to build a fulfilling and successful career in content that I’m thankful for every day.

After graduating with honours from the UK’s oldest redbrick university (BA Classical Literature and Ancient Civilisations) I moved to Melbourne as an aspiring journalist and editor. I picked up freelance work and had a big break editing a published lifestyle book, then decided to chase a career in copywriting.

In 2016, I started at Kogan.com. It still felt very much like a startup then, and a lean team meant all hands on deck. I quickly learnt a headless CMS, UX design, agile ways of working HTML and CSS, a CRM, how to A/B subject lines and how to write copy that shifts conversion metrics. I helped the brand onboard verticals (Kogan Mobile, Kogan Insurance, Kogan Energy, Dick Smith, Tandy) and established content management practices and voice / tone guides for them all. Within 12 months, I was managing a team of copywriters, designers and marketers delivering end-to-end promotional campaign strategies like Black Friday and Click Frenzy.

I knew I wanted to transition to UX full-time, so I found myself as a UX content writer at Origin when they were deep in a digital transformation and scaling a small content team.

5 years later - I’ve build a content design practice from 3 to 14 content designers working across tech, marketing and customer lifecycle. I’ve focussed for the past 2 years on ContentOps and enterprise content strategy.
